General Summary:

The Digital Incubator & Applied AI team is an inter-disciplinary team of Digital strategist, Product Innovators, Data Scientists and technical geeks. We provide digital thought leadership to inform our business strategies and incubate next-gen cloud-based digital and analytical offerings. We drive ideas from concept to launch in a rapid fashion, taking smart risks on strategic and innovative offerings. We assemble solutions by building and integrating with a broader partner ecosystems of emerging tech start-ups and established companies.

Part strategist, part product innovator, part entrepreneur – you will be responsible for generating, framing and pitching new ideas / opportunities. You will find creative ways to assemble/ build these digital capabilities and solutions that can drive strategic growth and lower operating cost structures for Unum.

Unum is at a pivotal point in its AI Journey. We are evolving from operationalizing a few successful AI products to adopting a AI-first approach to transformation of our core capabilities/offering.

As a leader of AI Products & Platforms within Unum, you will be instrumental in transforming Unum from a traditional insurance player to a leading AI first digital insurance company and doing it at scale.

  1. Set vision, conceptualize, shape and own execution of AI-product/platform

vision and roadmaps

  2. Establish the playbook for building AI based products, establishing

foundational AI platform and deploying AI @ scale within Unum

You will partner closely with Unum business leaders, IT Delivery, Transformation leadership, and Unum IT architecture to lead the development of AI based digital products. This role will have direct management responsibilities for a team of AI Product owners, Business Designers, full stack architects and engineers.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads and builds competency around AI product/platform management and operational success & design

  • Sets a vision, reimagine AI first digital products/ offerings/ capabilities and align cross-functional and cross-disciplinary teams to create, launch, and maintain AI-powered products/solutions for use internally or in the external market

  • Influences senior executives and business leaders around strategies and investments related to AI

  • Manage the planning, development, launch, and success of products/solutions powered by AI, machine learning, and deep learning technologies

  • Build foundational platforms for various domains e.g., Claims decisioning, Interventions, Retention, Last mile pricing by assembling solutions

  • Lead and help manage cross-functional, cross-disciplinary matrixed teams of Data Scientists and Information Technology professionals working within agile/infrastructure or operations teams, working across a wide range of environments, supporting the analysis, development, design, creation, modification and testing of AI/ML powered solutions

  • Partner with change management and business stakeholders to integrate and operationalize AI into business processes and digital product offerings to deliver business value

  • Interfaces with sales, marketing, operations and as well as alliance and market management positions.

  • Interfaces with finance, legal, procurement, and enablement teams.

  • Influences, establishes, and drives organizational performance and direction for area of responsibility

  • Ensure strong, diverse talent and leadership pipeline in place to meet aggressive business goals. Develops, coaches, and engages people to higher levels of performance.

  • Understands and is an advocate of following architecture standards, practices, and processes.

Job Specifications

  • 7+ years of experience in Digital Product Management with 5+ years in AI/emerging tech-based product management

  • 10+ years of leadership experience

  • Experience building AI-powered internal capabilities and launching AI-powered products in market with familiarity in areas like stats, machine learning models, and algorithms

  • Solid execution experience of taking ideas to scale

  • Strong communicator, able to influence senior executive leadership.

  • Experience bridging the divide between the theoretical and the applied. Proven expertise in communicating that vision and experience to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Strategic innovator with demonstrated experience of pushing the boundaries and reimagining the art of possible.

  • Exhibits courage by taking smart risks and encourages others to do so; empowers innovative approaches by motivating others to be proactive and resourceful.

  • Understanding of Agile/Lean leadership principles

  • Ability to apply broad business understanding of internal and external trends and financial considerations to leverage business process and technology opportunities, meet evolving customer needs, and ensure successful implementation of area plans.

  • Demonstrated depth of IT knowledge with diversity in technical experience. Is seen as a credible technology partner.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$163,700.00-$320,000.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
